Gretsch G9200 Boxcar Roundneck Resonator 2023 - Satin Mahogany
Gretsch G9200 Boxcar Roundneck Resonator 2023 - Satin Mahogany
It’s surprising how warm—yet cutting—a wood-bodied resonator guitar can sound (imagine an acoustic version of a Strat in the 2nd/4th pickup position). If you’ve ever heard old Chet Atkins recordings featuring his DelVechio resonator, you’re familiar with that haunting tone. And the Gretsch Boxcar definitely has it.
The Boxcar is beautifully understated: The front, back and sides are made of laminated, figured mahogany in a semi-gloss finish. The body and rosewood fingerboard are unbound, as are the f-holes. Fingerboard inlays are simple dots. The vintage-style headstock gets a little more attention, with turn-of-the-century Paris-style lettering over pearloid facing—less subtle, but fun and true to the original Gretsch guitars of the 1930s era.
The neck is single-piece mahogany with an easy-playing soft “V” shape. Tuners are Grover Sta-Tites. The resonator is the new Gretsch “Ampli-Sonic” diaphragm made from hand-spun aluminum, with a '30s-style ‘poinsettia-pattern’ cover plate. The Boxcar is lightweight, too, at around 5 1/2 lbs.

Why We Like Gretsch Resonator Guitars
Creative guitarists—especially studio-denizen tone junkies—use a broad array of sounds. And nothing stands out in a mix like a resonator-style guitar, whether played traditionally (roundneck) or with a slide (squareneck). Since vintage instruments can get a little pricey, we’re happy to offer Gretsch’s selection of low-to-mid-priced reso guitars that offer traditional tone and performance without the big investment.
